Connect the Dots Event Inspires Inclusivity and Accessibility

On Saturday, November 2nd the Louisville Free Public Library hosted STEAM Day, an event filled with family fun exploring science, technology, engineering, arts, and math at their South Central Regional Library branch. There were a variety of indoor and outdoor activity stations run by local organizations like the Kentucky Science Center, Louisville Nature Center, Frazier Museum, and many more. Through our Connect the Dots education series, APH joined in the fun of STEAM Day with a space themed, escape room style activity that used APH products in creative ways to stimulate imagination, interest, and critical thinking. 

Our young explorers became the crew of the APH 1 Stem rocket and received the following prompt. They were tasked with establishing a colony on Mars, but their mission hit a snag when a hard landing scattered crucial supplies across the Martian landscape. With Houston back in contact and their emergency A.I. activated, the kids were challenged to work together as a team to locate essential pieces, tackle problem-solving tasks, and get the mission back on track. Using accessible STEM products, like the Cranmer Abacus, Geometro, and Code Jumper, they navigated each obstacle, learning and having a blast along the way.  

Just like all our previous Connect the Dots events, we wanted to use our time at STEAM Day to help inspire children through an accessibility mindset and encourage them to think of ways to create a more inclusive world. As an extension of The Dot Experience, Connect the Dots isn’t just about education – it’s about helping build better understanding and knowledge about blindness within our local community. By participating, families gain a deeper awareness of the barriers that blind or low vision individuals may face and are inspired to think about how they can make the world around them more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming. Through these programs, APH hopes to empower community members to advocate for accessibility in their own lives and to become champions of inclusion.  

We only have one Connect the Dots event left for the year! Our last event will take place on December 14th at the Jeffersontown Branch Library. Join us for a fun educational program that explores the unique techniques used by musicians who are blind or low vision to master their craft. Participants will learn how these musicians use tactile feedback and auditory skills to interpret and perform music, offering an exciting look at the intersection of sensory adaptation and artistic excellence.
